Copelandia

The psychedelic effects of some plants and fungi have been utilized by humans in spiritual ceremonies for thousands of years. Over the past couple of decades, psilocybin, more commonly known as “magic mushrooms'', has been successfully investigated as a form of therapeutic treatment. Cancer patients often develop significant symptoms of depression and anxiety — of which psilocybin has been proven to treat, while increasing quality of life and decreasing death-related anxiety and depression. At the 6-month follow-up to these clinical trials, the patient's improvements continued to be sustained.

Not only can these forms of mushrooms be ingested to heal patient’s physical and mental health, but other forms of mushrooms can also heal the earth. From death, fungi emerges, exchanging nutrients and sending chemical messages vital to survival of the entire ecosystem. Some species of mushrooms produce enzymes that break down the tough, aromatic hydrocarbons found in petroleum and soak up chemicals like mercury. With the help of Copelandia, patients and community members can engage in a controlled, medically induced trip. At a select number of sites in Baton Rouge, Copelandia can be installed by the community in any arrangement they see fit.  The installation is fairly simple, designed to be lo-tek and fully immersive for the community to have a sense of autonomy over their environments and explore their creativity and resourcefulness. The seating arrangements, or “Russian Dolls”, are comprised out of recycled containers and oil barrels of the users liking - creating mycelium shells that can be mixed with native plants and seeds to biodegrade into the earth and heal the damage from the petrochemical refineries. The seats can also be hollowed out to allow for storage during the medicinal trips to allow for personalized and efficient experience convenience.
